Event Details
Sydney Symphony Orchestra Artist in Residence Brett Dean conducts music of his own and Rachmaninoff's Third Piano Concerto with fellow Australian Piers Lane as soloist.
This year SSO have been performing all the Rachmaninoff piano concertos and the cycle comes to a conclusion with his Third Concerto, well known from the film Shine. It begins with disarming simplicity - an elegant melody in the piano - but it's not long before all hell breaks loose in this virtuoso tour de force. Impressive! The first half of the concert takes death and rejuvenation as its cue. The delicate, fragile sounds of the Scene with Cranes come from music that Sibelius wrote for the play Kuolema (Death). And Brett Dean conducts his own Fire Music - a heartfelt response to the Black Saturday bushfires of 2009. This piece captures in music the intense heat and destructive force of the fires, as well as the almost-miraculous rebirth of the landscape in the aftermath.
