In this concert, we launch a brand new ensemble, Brass Commons, featuring some of the country's most exciting young brass players, joined by one of Australia's finest mezzo sopranos, Sally-Anne Russell.
This debut concert ranges from works by Purcell, including Dido's Lament and Funeral Music for Queen Mary, to the premiere of a new song cycle, Three Jimanez Songs, by young Melbourne-based composer, Peter de Jager, commissioned especially for this performance. David Dzubay’s St Vitus’ Dance offers an emotional and rhythmic whirlwind, while Callum G’Froerer’s Ellington in Heaven and on Earth features arrangements of some of Duke Ellington's most soulful music.
This concert is present with the generous support of the Isobel and David Jones Family Foundation.
Featured non-Australian music: Purcell, Dzubay
