Event Details

An example of various disparate musical approaches coming together to show their inherent shared similarities. We have compositions by Johanna Selleck and Barry Conyngham, both firmly established Australian composers; also works by Evan lawson and May Lyon, both emerging composers that have studied and looked toward Barry and Johanna for guidance and inspiration - and then also Toru Takemitsu, teacher of Barry Conyngham. This is followed by a firmly established British composer, Mark-Anthony Turnage and one of the 20th century greats, Benjamin Britten in his centenary year. The final element to all these relationships is the one of audience and performer, seen most intimately in the "instant" composition of Benjamin Harrison, who improvises and creates in the moment, contrasting with all these prepared musical ideas and relationships.

Performers:
Conductor - Evan Lawson
Petrichor Ensemble - Jess Fotinos (harp), Alexina Hawkins (viola) and Rowan Hamwood (flute)
Tenor - Daniel Todd
Soprano - Rosemary Ball
Clarinet - Vilan Mai
Trumpet - Benjamin Harrison
Violin - Beatrix Stewart and Kat Tsyrlin
Cello - Ayrlie Lane

Featured non-Australian music: Toru Takemitsu: And then I knew T’was Dreaming for flute, viola and harp
