Event Details

To celebrate 25 wondrous years of entertaining our audiences, the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Choir has put together a concert full of joy and fabulous songs to usher in the next chapter of our musical journey. SILVER LININGS will feature popular classics from our repertoire in the past 25 years, including Freddie Mercury’s Bohemian Rhapsody and David Bowie’s Space Oddity. We will also premier original works from 6 Australian composers: Gordon Hamilton, Anna Jacobs, Dr Kathleen McGuire, Joseph Twist, Dan Walker & Sally Whitwell.

Joseph Twist drew the inspiration of his song Imagine from the words of John Lennon, Lady Gaga, RuPaul and Kylie Minogue, while Gordon Hamilton’s Turing Believes Machines Think sets British mathematician Alan Turing’s famous last syllogism to music. Anna Jacobs’s background in music theatre is evident in her gently rollicking ballad Sydney Harbour’ and Dan Walker’s The Journey Forward is an uplifting meditation on change in the face of difficulty. The choir is also proud to present two new works written in memory of our beloved accompanist Gareth Chan: Sally Whitwell’s Alone and Palely Loitering, a music of tranquillity yet deeply haunting, and Dr Kathleen McGuire’s Immortality. Immortality sets a poem by Estonian poet Juhan Liiv. McGuire sought musical inspiration from the 16th century folksong 'Awake, my heart’, and Immortality ponders where we might find the “original harmony”, concluding that music is the answer.

Come see you and enjoy an amazing night of music and songs!

Music Director: Dr. Sarah Penicka-Smith; Assistant Music Director: Steven Endres; Guest Conductor: Sally Whitwell; Pianist: Antonio Fernandez
