Event Details
Experience the towering presence of Beethoven in his Emperor concerto and Strauss in heroic mode - the finale to our Beethoven Piano Concerto mini-festival.
In June, David Robertson and Emanuel Ax present the complete Beethoven piano concertos - your chance to hear all five concertos in two weeks.
Beethoven's 'Emperor' has all the magnificent grandeur you'd expect in a truly great piano concerto. The composer's journey has encompassed Classical inspiration, virtuoso fireworks, defiant heroism, poetry and humour, and now in the fifth concerto it arrives at a newfound nobility and radiance of vision. Optimistic sounds for troubled times.
Musical heroics of a different kind shape Richard Strauss's autobiographical tone poem. Where Beethoven speaks for humanity, Strauss is very happy to name himself as hero! And music lovers forgive him because the music is so vivid and full of enthusiasm.
This program also includes a new work by Brett Dean.
Featured non-Australian music: Beethoven, Strauss
