Event Details
Of all the great composers, there are two who wear their hearts on their sleeves. Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninoff are neck and neck when it comes to the prize for heartfelt melodies and musical passion.
This concert presents young Macedonian pianist Simon Trpčeski in Tchaikovsky's flamboyant first piano concerto, an absolutely central work in the repertoire. And Vasily Petrenko, chief conductor of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, has matched it with Rachmaninoff's dramatic first symphony. This is brooding and gloomy music in the deliciously charismatic way that only Rachmaninoff knows how.
The indulgence and luxury of this Romantic Russian soundworld is introduced by Andrew Schultz's new fanfare, composed for our 2014 China tour and inspired by ancient instruments.
Featured non-Australian music: Tchaikovsky, Rachmaninoff
