Event Details
Peter Sculthorpe's Sun Music II had its origins in the score for Robert Helpmann's Sun Music ballet. The inspiration is the trance-like ritual of the Balinese 'monkey dance' and the result is rhythmically thrilling music with a spotlight on the percussion.
Walton found inspiration in the astonishing virtuosity of Jascha Heifetz and the result is a supremely romantic violin concerto. It dreams, it sings, it shows off. Everything you could ask for!
For Walton, Sibelius was in the top five - "what a composer!" And they come together in this concert with David Robertson. The Second Symphony is Sibelius's most popular: it has the fervent, noble character you hear in Finlandia and a light-filled, uplifting optimism.
Featured non-Australian music: Sibelius, Walton
