Event Details

World renowned Australia bass player and composer Steve Hunter, will release ‘Cosmos’- his first live album as bandleader. For over thirty years Steve Hunter has been creating original electric jazz music as bandleader, bass player and composer. He has appeared on over 70 albums , and over 130 of his compositions have featured on albums by a wide range of artists. With a line-up that includes Matt McMahon, Andrew Gander and Matt Keegan, you would expect good music on this album. Steve hadn’t set out with the intention of recording a live album, but when he listened back to their gig at 505 he knew something magical had been captured. In the lead up to this show Steve had been working intensively on his playing. The recording captures a virtuoso at the top of his game. But Steve’s technical prowess never overshadows musicality and there is plenty of space for the other band members to shine. “The idea was to choose a selection of my compositions that Andy, Matt and Matt knew well and that each has a strong identity unto itself. We’d then improvise, disassemble, reassemble and generally play upon them. I think it worked out beautifully…A lot of magic happened- that’s what makes this recording so special”.
