A sonic exploration in beauty and restraint.

The award-winning contemporary music group Syzygy Ensemble have, in their short time together, made an impressive impact. Within their first year (2010) they were awarded first prize in the chamber music section of the Australian Concerto and Vocal Competition and, were the only Australian group selected to perform at the 2011 Gaudeamus International Interpreter’s Award in Amsterdam. They have quickly gained a reputation as one of Australia’s finest new music ensembles, lauded for their virtuoso precision, innovative programming and ability to connect viscerally with their audiences. A Helpmann Award nomination and the release of their debut CD Making Signs in 2015 have attracted a growing enthusiastic audience.

Subtle Persuasion is a sonic exploration in beauty and restraint. Melbourne composer Andrew Aronowicz evokes other-worldly veiled sounds in Gossamer that flirt between breath and pitch while shimmering translucent motifs are teased out of the Ensemble like spindles of spider silk. Liza Lim concocts a love potion for solo violin that emulates the rich sympathetic resonances of the Norwegian Hardanger fiddle, and celebrated spectralist, Tristan Murail meticulously weaves microtonal sounds and exotic colours to create a miniaturised orchestra that functions like clockwork. Be enchanted and inspired by the progressive palettes of these innovative artists delivered by Syzygy Ensemble.
