Event Details
The startlingly personal orchestral palette of Sibelius is loved by audiences and musicians alike, and this concert is framed by two works written in the same year by the composer, at a time when Sibelius was driven by fierce patriotism. From the opening bars, Brahms’ Song of Destiny arrests our attention. Inspired by poetry depicting the lives of ‘blessed ones’ and mere mortals, this symphonic poem is one of Brahms’ most original and profound compositions. Sydney Youth Orchestra is honoured to present Looking at the Stars, by respected Australian composer Graeme Koehne, commissioned by Rev. Dr. Arthur Bridge AM on behalf of Ars Musica Australis to commemorate his 60th Birthday. The work will receive its second performance in this concert, following the world premiere on 18 May 2012. This piece will also feature children's chorus, and an adult choir. Pre-concert talk from 2.15pm
Featured non-Australian music: Sibelius, Brahms
