In ‘Tales from Old Russia’ we explore five wonderfully diverse works, all inspired in some way by Russia. Though not well known, these short wind quintets by Russian composers Tcherepnin and Ippolitov-Ivanov’s are gems of the repertoire, while Stravinsky’s Septet shows his unique style – “grave and funny, elegant, clean, inventive, energetic, surprising” (Steinberg). Australian Ian Munro’s Tales from Old Russia tells a Russian folk story through music, while Beethoven’s enduringly popular ‘Razumovsky’ Quartets were composed for the Russian ambassador to Vienna.
Performers: Victoria Jacono-Gilmovich | violin, Lucy Warren | violin, Tara Houghton | viola, Eleanor Betts | cello, Belinda McGlynn | piano, Rowena Watts | clarinet, Rachel Cashmore | oboe, Melissa Woodroffe | bassoon, Sharn McIver | horn
Featured non-Australian music: Alexander Tcherepnin - Wind Quintet, Op. 107 , M.M. Ippolitov-Ivanov - 'An Evening in Georgia' , Stravinsky - Septet , Beethoven - Quartet Op. 59 No. 1, ‘Razumovsky’
