Benjamin Skepper LIVE (2 sets)

With a new visual show illuminating his orchestra of musical instruments and electronics, internationally acclaimed artist Benjamin Skepper will be joined by long time collaborator and visual engineer Tomoya Kishimoto, direct from Japan. The duo have performed locally at MONA FOMA and in their next chapter will transform St Stephens Church into a multi media canvass, promising an immersive and magical journey into Sight and Sound. Skepper will perform two sets, presenting a mix of old and new compositions for electric cello, piano, theremin, and electronics.

Skepper is also gearing up for a research fellowship at the Moscow Conservatory of Music where he joins a leading team of researchers, scientists, mathematicians and artists working in the new field of “Genetic Music”. This ground breaking interdisciplinary collaboration will culminate in a live performance at the 2016 Symmetry Festival in Vienna.

WHAT IS TECTONIC?

TECTONIC is a new series of site-specific hybrid Art “Happenings”, driven by architecture, sound and technology. Its founder Benjamin Skepper is no stranger to art interventions in rare and historical places: Shinto Shrines, Churches, Palaces, Mediaeval Clock Towers, Museums, industrial worksites, abandoned Tsarist war barracks. The intention is to bring Art and its audience into unique and unexpected environments. Site-specific art installations by their very nature demand a physical process of building and re-configuring systems from the ground up to create a space for presentation. TECTONIC, meaning “to build”, is thus envisaged to draw attention to the unseen processes that underpin art installation, and further serves as an alternative platform for expression, beyond the confines of organised and conventional structures.

Presented by contrapuntal, TECTONIC 1.0 will be staged at St Stephens Anglican Church in Richmond, an architectural masterpiece considered Victoria’s earliest bluestone church constructed in the English Gothic style during the gold rush era in 1851.

Skepper and the contrapuntal Artist Collective will present Live Music, Visual Projections, Multi Media and Fine Art, supported by an expert community of global partners who share a progressive vision of experimentation and innovation.
