Event Details
Despite having received great acclaim and numerous award nominations for their album releases, the mainstay of The catholics’ musical world throughout their 18-year history has always been their joyous live performances.
Winners of a Mo Award for Best Jazz Group, they have proven their cult status as one of Australia’s finest jazz bands repeatedly with sell-out concerts, tours and award-winning albums featuring their distinctive African, Caribbean, Latin and Eastern influenced music.
Their first-ever public gig was for SIMA in fact, on the 4th of February 1991 at the Strawberry Hills Hotel, so it was inevitable that when The catholics decided to record their first live album, it should be for SIMA. Over two memorable nights in September last year at the Sound Lounge, engineer Ross A’hern captured the exuberance and breathtaking creativity of The catholics in full flight.
The results will be released on a 2-disc set entitled Inter Vivos (Latin for 'among the people'; Bugle Records) which will be launched at the Sound Lounge tonight. Leader Lloyd Swanton says, tongue in cheek 'the music flowed so effortlessly for those two nights that I was tempted to record this upcoming launch and release that as another live album'!
