2014 winner of Australia’s top music honour the Don Banks Award, pianist-composer Mike Nock, has remained a vital force on the Australasian music scene for more than 50 years. In 1961, soon after recording ‘Move & Sittin In’ with the 3-Out, he went to the USA where he lived for 25 years, working alongside many jazz greats such as Coleman Hawkins, Tony Williams, Dionne Warwick, etc. His first international recognition came in the early 60s, through his jazz-rock group the Fourth Way, establishing his credentials as a leading creative musician.
Winning many awards over his lengthy career, he was inducted into the Bell Awards Australian Jazz Hall of Fame in 2009. His biography “Serious Fun-the Life and Music of Mike Nock” was published in 2010. From 1996-2001 he was musical director of Naxos/Jazz records. His trio with bassist Brett Hirst and drummer James Waples, is regarded as one of the top modern jazz groups in Australasia. Both musicians have played with Mike for many years and are featured on several of his award-winning albums. Very much in demand with other top groups they bring a wealth of contemporary experience to the bandstand.
