The timeless beauty and intensity of the Brahms Clarinet Trio, cheeky jazz in Torke's Telephone Book, meditation on icy landscapes and relationships in Tesch-Muller's Voices of a Northern Winter, glowing virtuosity from Vine's Flute Sonata, and surreal yellow night watch on the ocean in Kennedy's The Silence of Thousands. The Silence of Thousands is a surreal true story of when a passenger leaps from a cruise ship in the nighttime, in the middle of a nameless ocean. In this world premiere song cycle from Andrew Kennedy the alarm is raised and the captain turns the boat, stopping all the entertainments and engines, and asking for total quiet to find the man among the moonlit waves. The music explores the feeling of many people standing hushed and expectant, straining for signs of the lost man, and further, questions the change in mindset a person could have immediately after performing such a rash action. Those subsequent moments are more than just an absence of sound, they are a palpable tension of held breath, the horror of the daringness to execute such an act, and the intoxication of the spray, breeze, waves, and moon of the monochromatic night.
