Event Details
In this special preview, The Toby Wren Quartet performs new works from their soon-to-be-released CD recording, Rich and Famous, recorded by Kim Cunio at QCGU’s iMERSd studio. The compositions form part of an enquiry into the intersection of jazz and Carnatic (South Indian classical) music and the ways in which musicians think while interpreting and improvising. The ensemble interpret the music within a jazz paradigm, but the compositions are equally influenced by jazz and Carnatic music. What strategies do the musicians need to employ to effectively engage with this ‘weird jazz’? To what extent does it take them out of their tradition? and, what musical effects can be created in this hybrid compositional space?
