Three masterful examples of the Theme and Variations

Throughout the ages, one of the most popular forms of music composition has been the Theme and Variations. Of all the forms, this is the one that is most easily understood by the wider public and can be a great vehicle for making plain the art of the composer.

The theme and variations was a favourite form for lesser composers who would routinely make variations on popular tunes of the day. However, in the hands of the great composers the Theme and Variations can become the ideal form for creative invention.

This program explores three masterful examples of the theme and variations form in action, realised in three very different ways.
