Event Details

Respected pianist/composer Dr Tony Gould is one of the most ‘formally’ recognised figures to work in the Australian jazz scene (although Gould refers to his music as ‘post-jazz’ ).

After work on panels at Arts Victoria, he was the jazz representative on the Music Board of the Australia Council for several years. After completing two terms he received a two-year Australia Council Fellowship over 2006/7, to compose major cross-genre works and write two books. Gould was also awarded the Don Banks Fellowship by the Australia Council in early 2009.

Since resigning as Dean of the VCA School of Music a few years ago, in this new phase of life, Gould has returned to leading his own groups, and recording. To mark his 70th. Birthday, he is joined for two nights by some of his favourite colleagues, headed by the legendary saxophonist Graeme Lyall (now in semi-retirement in Mt. Gambier). With Gould on both acoustic piano and electric piano, the guests will include Imogen Manins (cello), Nick Haywood (acoustic bass), David Jones and Tony Floyd (percussion), David Griffith (clarinet), Peter Petrucci (guitar), and Emma Gilmartin (voice), in very much an acoustic format.
