Event Details

A magical hour of improvisation awaits you

Piano, trombone and voice improvisation comes together lyrically in this close impromptu performance by two of Australia’s finest jazz musicians, Tony Gould and Ben Gillespie.

Tony Gould is one of Australia’s most revered pianists and respected musicians and Australia’s first professor of jazz. For five decades he has been involved in an extraordinary number of recording projects both as pianist and composer and has been at the forefront of music education in Australia. His career has embraced many styles of music, not least jazz and other improvisatory music in addition to traditional and contemporary classical music.

Ben Gillespie has been part of the diverse Melbourne music scene for over 25 years, having studied at the Victorian College of the Arts under Brian Brown and Tony Gould, graduating in 1992. Ben has performed and recorded with local and international jazz musicians including Mark Simmonds, Wycliffe Gordon and Horace Tapscott. Ben’s other performing and recording credits as a trombonist, vocalist and percussionist include collaborations and features with Gotye, Paul Kelly, Eric Burdon, Isaac Hayes, Missy Higgins, Dan Sultan, Vika Bull, Augie March, Tim Rogers and Amanda Palmer. Ben has recorded five albums with his own unclassifiable band The Hoodangers and toured throughout North America, Western Europe, Asia and the Pacific.
