Too - a short sound work for theatre.
An unspecified future finds Myra in a windowless room—salvaging domestic goods gathered from a contaminated landscape. Carolyn Connors brings her matchless talents to this inscrutable character, a woman who stands resilient at the centre of history’s unstoppable flow. Is the heartbeat’s audible electric charge her own, or that of the globe’s economic relations?
Creating Too as a musical composition: sound, script and choreography—
Somewhat like Gregorian chant, Too is premised on the richness of austerity. Though composed free of a musical stave, Too has been collaboratively created as a kind of chamber music, based on two implied narratives. It brings into polyphonic relationship a chronicle of the stock market and the embodied experience of a woman’s work. Each of these elements seems detached, driven by a self-generating momentum, sustained by subtle variety within constant repetition. Yet structurally and metaphorically each ‘melodic line’ is a condition for the other. As counterpoint they can become, of course, something else: beyond words, ineffable. In the ceaseless present of sensory awareness, spoken language could drift from ordinary meanings—abstract and concrete may converge, figure and ground gradually invert, effects of horizontal coincidence might merge with shifts in depth.
