Don’t be put off by the nickname “Unfinished”. Schubert’s Unfinished Symphony is one of the composer’s finest creations, packing a whole world of Romantic fervour into its two superbly crafted movements. In 1944 composer Aaron Copland and dancer Martha Graham created Appalachian Spring, a ballet that enacts scenes from American pioneer life and includes among its melodies the well-known Shaker song “Simple Gifts”. An instant classic, Appalachian Spring went on to win a Pulitzer Prize, cementing Copland’s already significant reputation. The Appalachian Spring – Suite draws from the ballet’s principal episodes, capturing both the choreographic vitality and the tender moments of this great American work.
Richard Strauss’s Duett-Concertino for clarinet, bassoon, strings and harp dates from his so-called “Indian summer” period, the final years of his life when he produced some of his most rapturous music, including the Oboe Concerto and the Four Last Songs. The Concerto for Clarinet and Bassoon by Hobart-based composer Maria Grenfell, here receiving its first performance, has been specially commissioned to complement the Strauss Duett-Concertino.
