Event Details

Edvard Grieg had an intense love for his Norwegian homeland and in his Symphonic Dances turned to Norway’s rich folk music tradition when looking for melodic inspiration. The result is a four-movement suite that teems with memorable themes and brilliant orchestral colours.

Tchaikovsky’s Rococo Variations for cello and orchestra is a love letter to the composer’s adored Mozart, while Ravel’s Le tombeau de Couperin is a touching homage to French music of the 18th century. Composed during World War I, Ravel dedicated each movement to a fallen comrade.

Like Grieg, Tasmanian composer Don Kay is moved by the natural beauty of the landscape around him. Moonlight Ridge was inspired by an especially picturesque corner of Tasmania.

Featured non-Australian music: Grieg, Tchaikovsky, Ravel
