The concert opens with a musical elegy to the late Peter Sculthorpe, written for strings and percussion, composed by University of Melbourne Master's student Harry Sdraulig.
Then, one of the most popular and seminal works in the orchestral repertoire, Mahler’s Symphony No.5 - portraying a tumultuous journey of contrasting emotions, tracing a musical arc from darkness to light, which reflects a growing emphasis by Mahler on orchestral virtuosity. This is the Orchestra’s premiere performance of the fifth symphony under the baton of Principal Guest Conductor Fabian Russell.
