Event Details
The jaw-dropping virtuosity of pianist David Fung must be heard and seen to be believed! In the Willoughby Symphony’s PASSION, David and Dr Nicholas Milton AM reunite on stage for a performance of Shostakovich’s second piano concerto – one of the composer’s most remarkable and intimately textured concertos. Composed for his son, Maxim, it is a work of dazzling virtuosity, poetry, passion, and elegant beauty. David and Nicholas last worked together with the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra in a wildly successful collaboration at the Melbourne Town Hall.
This concert will commence with a magical portrayal of glimmering atmosphere in Composer-in-Residence, Nigel Westlake’s evocative and imaginatively conceived orchestral poem, Shimmering Blue.
Concluding the concert, the orchestra will perform Tchaikovsky’s powerful Pathetique symphony, a work he composed from the abyss of personal and emotional despair … a symphonic utterance like no other in the repertoire that takes listeners on a heartbreaking internal odyssey of the human soul.
Featured non-Australian music: Shostakovich, Tchaikovsky
