AIDA Mitsuo
This phrase asks us to consider who we are, and who we will
become if we try to be someone we are not. My response is an
attempt to capture musically the powerful yet unassuming
simplicity of both the words themselves and their appearance on
the page. The "identity" of the text is revealed as it is
gradually built up from its component sounds, with close
attention paid to Ma, a Japanese concept of relative space. The
title aida is the kanji character used to represent Ma, !, but
the alternate pronunciation "aida" (eye-dah) is taken as it is
homophonic with the calligrapher's name.
