Product details

Josie and the Emeralds are the acclaimed early music soprano Josie Ryan and some of Australia's finest viol players: The Emerald City Viols. Founded in 2011, the group is critically acclaimed for its sophisticated performances and innovative programming of Renaissance and contemporary works, including compositions and arrangements by their director, Brooke Green.

The Emerald Leopard is one of four songs composed by Brooke Green based on poems of Dorothy Porter. Mysterious, imperious and shimmering on the horizon: these are some of the images Dorothy Porter evokes in her poem The Emerald Leopard. The idea of transformation, the desire to move the listener is at the heart of much Renaissance poetry and music. With this understanding, Josie and the Emeralds perform exquisite songs from Renaissance England: by Orlando Gibbons, including The Silver Swan; John Dowland including Flow my Tears and Thomas Morley: Sing we and Chant it.

Other works on this CD by Brooke Green include The Shades (Audience Prize, The Tenth International Leo M. Traynor Composition Competition for New Music for Viols, 2013) and Travelling to the Question inspired by Nick Cave, Hildegard of Bingen and Martin Heidegger. The CD also includes Brooke Green's arrangements of: Elena Kats-Chernin's brilliant Eliza Aria from Wild Swans; Andrea Pandolfo's Albanese - a moving lament from the perspective of a refugee mother - which has been popularly viewed on YouTube; and some delightful piano works by Ross Edwards re-imagined for viol quartet with the new title Miniatures.
