Product details
Chimes, Fractured is based on the interactions of
independent, strongly flavoured instrumental sounds.
The idea arose during a visit to the Roman Catholic Liverpool
Cathedral, where, inside the building an organist was practising;
outside a skirl of bagpipes was adding colour to a Scottish
wedding; and enveloping all these was the sound of bells. When
standing in a position where these intersected in a balanced way,
one could hear the independent strands breaking into, and
fracturing each other; creating something new and different from
the simple addition of several parts.
Chimes, Fractured does not attempt to recapture that
chance experience. Rather, it explores some of the possibilities
resulting from the combination of these distinctive elements, in
a more deliberately structured way.
The ABC recording was taken to the International Rostrum of Composers, by the ABC in May 1972. It achieved the best result up to then by an Australian composer.
