Product details
Circles in Life is about birth, life and death; one
generation dying out and a new one carrying on; daily routines
and rituals; travelling to and from the same places; re-visiting
places and so on.
Much inspiration for this composition has come from The First
Circle (1984) by Pat Metheny and Lyle Mays which begins with the
handclapping of rhythmic patterns like in Part 1 of Tehillim
(1981) by minimalist composer Steve Reich. In The First Circle
Metheny and Mays maintain and develop the rhythmic patterns
throughout the piece. Circles in Life is based on the opening
12/8 guitar rhythmic pattern from The First Circle and several
sub-divisions thereof.
In Circles in Life the fusion of contemporary art music,
jazz, traditional African music and natural sounds from Africa is
forged into a classical structure, Sonata form. There is an
introduction, an Exposition with two subjects or themes, a
Development section which consists of improvised solos based on
the cyclic chord progressions from the two themes, a
Recapitulation and a Coda.
Compositional techniques used to portray circular effects are
ostinato patterns, major chords becoming minor and vice versa,
straight quavers being swung, ascending and descending lines,
undulating and oscillating effects, and so on.
