Come O Creator : SATB, organ or piano, or other keyboard / by Brett M McKern.
by Brett McKern (2004)
This work is based on Gregorian melodies: Veni Creator Spiritus, the famous Pentecost hymn, here versified in a regular metre as Come, O Creator, Spirit blest. In this version it is sometimes used at Novena in the Roman Catholic tradition. This is treated as a chorale, sung in parts by the choir over a chorale prelude like organ accompaniment. The second Gregorian melody, used in the accompaniment, is O Lux beata Trinitas. Both these tunes are reharmonised in this work. From about bar 43 the tunes are used motivically and developed such that not unlike the famous Jesu, Joy of man's desiring-like treatment of alternating choir and accompaniment (J.S. Bach) of the opening, both work together to reach a climactic ending. This work is suitable for Pentecost and other feasts of the Spirit, but can be interpreted as appropriate to Communion and other days as well. The accompaniment has been written to be played on organ or piano but will work on other keyboard instruments where no pedalboard is available.
