During a visit to Brisbane in 1990 the American pianist Selma Epstein contacted me and invited me to write a short work which she proposed to include in recital programs she later gave in Europe and the USA. The specification was for a "short" piece and Contrasts was the result. It gives opportunity to the performer to make meaningful contrasts in dynamics, tone, tempo and touch while recognising the contour of phrasing.
