Product details
Danza de Monta as ('Dance of the Mountains', 2003) pays homage to the rural mountain music of eastern Cuba and the southern Andes of Peru. This piece develops a theme derived from a montuno-a rhythmic and syncopated piano ostinato-vamp that literally means 'from the mountain'-through various configurations. These montuno sections are episodically interrupted by contrasting passages that feature sparse dissonant chords that move parallel to each other. These passages are suggestive of the interlocking layers one hears in communal Andean panpipe music. Both musical ideas ultimately converge and consequently brew to a climax.
