Product details
Echoes from the Past is essentially free twelve-tone composition, and its pitch material derived from a matrix constructed from a 'prime' or 'original' row, it's retrograde, inversion, retrograde-inversion, and their twelve transpositions. This is further developed by 'multiplicative transformation', which is a method that multiplies the 12 pitch class numbers of the original row, 0 to 11, by seven, thereby transforming minor second (or interval class 1) into perfect fifths (or interval class 7) and vice versa, with multiples of 12 then finally subtracted, providing another 48 rows. 'Rotation' is also employed, which transforms the order of pitch classes in various ways, whereby cyclic permutation may be applied for example, to dyads of a set (creating a two-stage cycle), trichords of a set (creating a three-stage cycle), or tetrachords of a set (creating a four-stage cycle). The other method employed is called 'derivation', which produces new sets by the use of transformed segments of the original 12-tone set, resulting in a 'derived set'. Many extended flute techniques are also explored, such as multiphonics, quarter-tones, progressive vibrati, broken sounds, harmonics, lip oscillations, single sounds linked to sound amalgams, single sounds with the rhythmical superimposition of another sound, fingered acciaccatura-portamento, smorzato, timbral modulations, fingered lip portamento and key clicks. The piece is structured around an arch form, with the second half being literally a retrograded copy of the first half.
