Product details

Ecstatic Visions is at its core an intensely personal and complex emotional work. The work is partly written in memorial of a loved one and partly written as a letter to my brother, an attempt to express through music what I can't put down in words.

It's useful to think of the work as expressing the views of two characters represented by the trumpet and the clarinet soloists respectively. They interact with each other and the landscape within the context of a series of visions shaped by the orchestra, each encapsulated in a separate movement of the work. Bridging each of these images is a monologue (cadenza) from which each of the characters provides a deeper insight into their makeup.

Although the work is really exploring universal themes of loss, friendship, love and above all hope and optimism, the inspiration for the work grew from an intense array of emotions that struck me in the moments following the announcement of the death of a friend, who suffered deeply with personal issues both physical and psychological.

In these moments I saw a vivid image of an encumbered soul, flying free of the mortal coil and up and into the sky. The feeling and image that stays with me most strongly is of that soul, ecstatic, wreathed in beautiful flames as it left the atmosphere with all the exuberance of a something that was once trapped but is now free.
