Product details

Miriam Hyde wrote about this Fantasia: "The well-known tune, Waltzing Matilda, is treated freely, though there is no doubt that its identity would be apparent to even the casual, untrained listener. Its two main features are the opening repeated note figure. Once a jolly swagman, and the final arching phrase, I'll go a-waltzing Matilda with you."

Difficulty: Advanced

Duration: 3 min.

Includes programme notes.

Originally for theatre orchestra as part of the music for "Heritage", produced at the Tivoli Theatre, Adelaide, in S.A.'s Centenary, 1936. This served as an overture to a scene of a jolly swagman camped by a billabong -- Composer's note.

Revised notation 1965

This piano solo is a transcription, by the composer, of an Overture that was part of the orchestral music for the pageant “Heritage” which was staged during the South Australian Centenary Celebrations in Adelaide in 1936. Written soon after her return from three years study in London at the Royal College of Music, she rescored the work for larger concert orchestra in 1943.
This arrangement for piano solo is very suitable as an encore piece because of its brevity and charm. The composer also arranged this work for two pianos (1936), flute quartet (1940), piano trio - violin. viola and piano (1941), piano duet - four hands (1988), woodwind quintet - two flutes, oboe, clarinet and bassoon (1991) (also published by The Keys Press), and piano trio - violin, cello and piano (1994).

Typeset edition.

This edition produced 2007.
