Product details

This piece was written at the beautiful Tuscan castle of Gargonza, in 1973. The castle had been developed as a collection of holiday houses. I was on holiday there, and met a Belgian family who were there with their three children, the youngest of whom, who was 13, played the flute. There was a Steinway in the public hall, and I decided to write a piece to play with the flautist, and this piece is the result.

The scherzo reflects the mercurial nature of the young flautist, while the trio basks in the irresponsible indulgences of a Tuscan holiday. It is as far away in style as could be imagined from the post-serial avant-garde at that time fashionable in Europe. The scherzo is in a style resembling Stravinsky's neo-classical idiom. The trio uses a slight extension of the harmonic vocabulary of Schubert and Brahms.
