Product details

In the Utter Darkness was written for a special concert by The Seymour Group given during an Asian arts festival at The Art Gallery of N.S.W. in 1983. The work is dedicated to Christine Draeger who advised me on technical matters in the composition of the work and who gave its first performance. The emphasis of this Seymour Group Concert program was on Australian new music works influenced by Asian traditional musics

In the Utter Darkness reflects my alignment to the tradition of Australian composers using the Japanese haiku poetic form as a central inspiration for pieces. It also reflects my lasting obsession with the honkyoku repertoire of Japanese shakuhachi music when considering aspects of phrasal design and ornamental detail.
