Product details

There are many introduced plants and animals in Australia and musical invasions, both planned and accidental are also numerous. Brazil has one of the greatest guitar cultures on the planet and in recent years this music has established a strong presence in Australia. I've never travelled to Brazil but I am fortunate to have heard and played with some wonderful exponents of Brazilian music, including Mauricio Carrilho, Paulo Aragão and Australia's own Doug de Vries. A number of my guitar pieces, including this set, are inspired by these artists.

1. Cane Toad is a chord study in the style of the first Etudes for guitar by Heitor Villa Lobos and Radamés Gnattali. The piece explores voicings and resonance and every chord has at least one open string. The runs utilize open strings and left hand finger patterns in the manner of Villa Lobos and Egberto Gismonti.

2. Free Range was written for my friend the Hong Kong guitarist Maggie Lo. The style of the piece is influenced by the chromatic harmony and expressive style of the wonderful Brazilian composer and guitarist Guinga.

3. Gecko is an attempt to write a moto perpetuo choro in the manner of Doug de Vries' classic guitar piece Hummingbird. I have learnt so much about Brazilian music from Doug and the piece is a tribute to him.
