Sheet Music: Score
Lo! The Star : SATB and organ / music by Brett M. McKern.

This work is a setting of a text from St Matthew's Gospel, and musically owes a lot to the influence of Sir Charles Hubert Hastings Parry's work on the composer. It is, if you like, a homage to him. The fulsome organ part and rich harmonies and modulations would not be out of place in the work of Parry, however, the proliferation of added sevenths and sixths to chords and the polyphonic sections give away another providence. The twentieth and sixteenth centuries have an influence as well.
It is strong and melodic, rich in harmony and texture, all a reflection of music fit for a king, indeed the greatest king. It includes sweeping and soaring melodies and crescendos and dimuendos. It's style makes it extremely suitable for the feast of Epiphany, the manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles, and like Pentecost, a representation of the beginning of the Christian Church. It's emotional rollercoaster also makes it appropriate for concert use.
