Product details
The range of available notes on the piano, were formed into two scales (not repeating at the 8ve): an ascending scale and a descending scale. These scales were divided into sections of differing lengths, and during the piece, the music progresses from one of these sections to another. Only one section is ever used at any moment. If a section of the ascending scale is used, the music reflects this by being predominantly upward moving; and similarly if a section of the descending scale is used, the music is downward in emphasis.
Apart from the parameters of up and down, the piece uses contrasts of pace, dynamics, attack, rhythm and texture.
"Music for Piano - Ascending and Descending" is dedicated to Michael Finnissy, and was commissioned with funds made available by the Vaughan Williams Trust of Great Britain.
