Product details
I got quite excited when I was approached by Rowan Harvey-Martin
early last year to write a new composition for the CYO to
celebrate the 100 years of our capital. Initially, there were a
few different versions of this piece 'on the table', including
one with a choir and narrator, but in the end, I decided to write
a symphony with triple woodwind and brass, six percussionists,
two harps, piano, celesta and extended strings. Similarly, the
title of the piece had evolved and many different versions were
considered in the process of writing it. Close to the finishing
of the first movement, I finally settled on the name of the
symphony (inspired by Smetana's 'My Country') and the
titles of the four movements:
1) The First Time I saw You ; 2) Under Your Spell ; 3) Could
This Be Love? ; 4) Where Do We Go From Here?
Sounds like a love affair? Well, in a way it is. We all experience a range of emotions for the places we live in, just like we do in a relationship with another person - be it love, hate, frustration, excitement, disappointment, happiness or any other. It is all in this piece.
I hope listening to it, you will be inspired to reflect on your own relationship you have with the place you call home.
