Sheet Music: ScoreNarratives and detours / Mark Grandison.by Mark Grandison (2002)
|
Product details
This work presents two alternating musical narratives, initially contrasting and unrelated, that develop along parallel and distinct lines.
The first musical narrative comprises slow, percussively chiming chords, that return in various registers. A broad, heavy melody is overlaid and increasingly embellished.
The second narrative begins as scurrying, brittle quavers in a fast compound time, at first presented tentatively, but building in intensity until it breaks into a rolling, wide-ranging bass line and an improvisatory right-hand melody.
The nexus between these disparate musical worlds is initially abrupt and tangential. Transitions become more fluid and natural as meeting points between the two narratives are realized. Indeed, in the climax, the two transformed ideas are finally juxtaposed.
A coda sees both narratives again alternate, this time more cautiously, before the sudden and final ascendancy of one.
