The title of this piece comes from pondering how to creative an improvisatory context in which multiple temporal strata appear simultaneously, without strictly notating the rhythmic devices. The title was realised when discussing French press coffee with a friend, when he said that the press he bought minimises coffee sediment when, which he was happy with. The coffee was really tasty, too. This conversation stimulated notions of flowing waterways, such as rivers or creeks, which would surely have many layers of "flow" within their movement; the closer to the edge or to the bed, the slower the water would flow as it is held back by other matter. Water close to the top would flow relatively quickly, while water toward the middle would flow relatively slowly, and all manner of gradations between. Imagining this flow, turbulent as it may be (clashing speeds, other material in the water, various whether variables, and so on), as a context for spontaneous (but somewhat directed) musical activity leads to the multiple "subtitles" of the piece. "Parallel streams", "A good French press minimises retention", "slowly migrating flow", and "drift" (leading to "of sediment"), suggesting all of these various contexts in which sediment moves, ultimately, at the slowest rate relative to other fluid forces.
