Nicolas Slonimsky (1894-1995) coined the term "pandiatonic" to
cover musical textures that are restricted to the diatonic scale
but are not tied to the triadic harmonic procedures upon which
Western music is traditionally based. Rather pandiatonic music
uses a more extensive range of harmonic ideas based on clusters,
and other non-triadic harmonic
Pandiatonic Explorations takes up Slonimsky's idea. The first movement explores block chords based on clusters. In the second movement a four-note melodic idea is accompanied by a series of evolving pandiatonic ostinati. The third movement develops textures based exclusively on the intervals of the second and the fourth; and the fourth movement explores combinations in both hands of three-note chords based on fourths.
The work is dedicated to the memory of Nicolas Slonimsky with whom I worked as a compositional amanuensis in 1984 and 1990.
