Sheet Music: ScoreParadox : piano solo / John Terry.by John Terry (2007)

Product details
There are two versions of Paradox. One is around 8'15"
in length. The other version is 4'40".
Paradox is a composition in which various styles - at
times somewhat contradictory - reveal themselves and result in
subtly surprising changes of mood and meaning.
The work is at one level jazz-influenced. This feature may even
be detected at the piece's outset. Here, a left-hand 'bluesy'
ostinato feature is set up. However the effect is more subliminal
than obvious. The seven-to-a-bar setting places another dimension
on the feature, and upper material tends to be more modal and, in
smaller places, dissonant.
At another level, 'Paradox' reflects minimalistic characteristics
and material is often repetitive with smaller motives appearing
and re-appearing in quite weirdly disguised forms. Yet at another
level there are virtuosic sections like 'quasi cadenzas': another
surprise in the general flow of works. These 'quasi cadenza'
sections are, for the performer, to be 'dashed off' and in
contrast to the more ethereal character of other sections.
The piece might easily have ended with a more traditional,
dynamically big and conclusive ending. However we are surprised
once again when dynamics, bit by bit, decrescendo into
inaudibility.
