Product details
The Pastorale is a piece for the festive season. It is about reflecting on all the happenings of the year. It opens with a calm ground bass on the piano over which the violin has a gentle melody. It returns to this melody after two developmental episodes. Pastorales are traditionally in a 6/8 or 12/8 metre like the famous Corelli Pastorale with gentle moving thirds over a ground bass. I have maintained the sense of a ground bass with the left hand chords in the piano part and the moving triads in the right hand. However I have chosen a 3/4 metre so that I can encourage the performers to use the expressive power of the quaver subdivision. To compensate this I have chosen a tempo of 120bpm so that the left hand chords of the piano still create a quasi duple 6/8 lilt.
