Pentatomic / Graeme Norris
Alto sax-led quintet performing mostly original composition with Ellington/Strayhorn songs. Operating at times on the common ground between cool West Coast jazz and hard bop, the playing observes all the niceties of dynamics, rhythm and intonation, while bringing its own fine flavour to the idiom. Norris has written a number of the tunes, and they have an ingenuity and a tang that can recall Bud Powell.
