I wrote Plaything for my eleven-year-old grandson Edward who is preparing his program for 5th grade A.M.E.B. examination. The work reflects bass and treble as equal partners in a musical dialogue which is sometimes tender and at other times energetic. The musical landscape is contrasted though there is unity in style. It is a short work, with a duration of 2:00 minutes, which calls for well-contrasted dynamics, warmth of tone, technical security and appreciation of colour through harmonic and key change.
