This work is in the long tradition of preludes and fugues and of chorale preludes for organ. The tune used here is Tallis' Canon which can be found in most hymn books. The Prelude uses the hymn as a cantus firmus in the pedals while a constantly moving (in quavers) motive weaves around over it in the manuals. The bass part swaps between the pedal and left hand part and thus while the pedal line should have a different tone colour to the manuals, it should be based on the same 8' pitch. The Fugue takes the melody of the hymn and works it's opening into a fugal subject. A four voice fugue is worked with an all but complete exposition which recurs in its entirety later in the movement. The episodes include sections with redundant entries, canon, transposition, modulation to the relative minor and reharmonisations of the subject. The melody of the chorale is also used motivically, particularly noticeably in the pedal line towards the end where it builds to a strong final cadence. A 16'/32' pedal should be used in this movement. The two movements may be used together or separately if required, particularly in the liturgy.
