Sheet Music: Score & Part(s)Romance for flute and orchestra / Ann Carr-Boyd.by Ann Carr-Boyd (2003)
|
Product details
Romance for Flute and Orchestra was commissioned by Ars
Musica Australis in 2002 for performance by the renowned flautist
Jane Rutter and the Sydney Youth Orchestra under chief conductor
Thomas Woods. The first performance was at the Riverside Theatre,
Parramatta on May 31, 2003.
The work is in one continuous movement, based on three chords
which appealed to me in a book of jazz piano studies.
There are three contrasting sections, each based on one of these
chords: A flat, B flat and E flat. The second and third chords
are the same, but rise by a semitone. The whole piece concludes
with
a recapitulation of ideas heard in the first three sections.
Romance is intended to be as the title suggests - a work that is
appealing and not too heavy.
Romance for Flute and Orchestra is dedicated to Canberra, one of
my favourite cities, which was besieged with overpowering
bushfires just as I was completing this piece.
It is also dedicated to the cosmic explorations and discoveries
carried out at Mount Stromlo and its historic observatory, which
was destroyed by the fires on Saturday January 18, 2003. It is
being rebuilt at the time of publication of this work.
