Product details
Sanctus Fortis takes its lyric from John Henry Newman's epic poem The Dream of Gerontius. The strong statement of Christian faith in this particular text is that spoken by Gerontius as he anticipates his death.
Sanctus Fortis is one of eleven hymns composed for the Tower of the Spirit - a book and recording project published in 1999 (ISBN 0 9577534 0 3) with support from the Australia Council. The lyrics for the songs adapt texts from the Christian mystical tradition including writings from William Johnston, Matthew Fox, Bede Griffiths, John Henry Newman, scripture and 4-5th century monk John Cassian. Cistercian monk, Fr. Michael Casey, remarks, "These are classical texts from the Christian tradition suitable for 'rumination'. Each time we return to them we find new sources of inspiration. This is food for the mature Christian".
The songs employ a contemporary style accessible to schools, congregations, choirs and groups, yet aim to convey a certain sense pf mystery and awe. They may be sung within the context of Christian liturgy and worship or to highlight key mysteries in the life of Christ. The fully arranged CD recordings can be simply listened to for pleasure and aim to support the Christian spiritual life.
